We all know that business and marketing have evolved over the years due to advances in technology. In order to keep up with these changes, we have made adjustments to the phrasing used to describe these strategies. Two relatively common phrases within the digital marketing world are Search Engine Optimization, commonly referred to as SEO; and Search Engine Marketing, known as SEM. These terms might sound similar but in reality they are very different. That being said, we decided to write this blog about the differences and strategies for SEO and SEM.
Let’s get started with the most basic differences. SEM is a paid search strategy whereas SEO is an organic search strategy. Much of the confusion between these two terms comes from the fact that search engine optimization is commonly thought of as a smaller component that resides under the umbrella of search engine marketing. This is simply not true. SEM should be used to refer strictly to paid searches. Search engine marketing focuses primarily on purchasing ads or keywords on search engine sites. SEO centers on using free and organic strategies to increase your ranking on search engines as well as drive traffic to your website. This information will be helpful when we discuss strategies.
Implementing SEM Strategies
Here’s what you can do to implement various SEM strategies. Start by purchasing some keywords that relate to your business. It is important to note that any keywords purchased should appear frequently across your entire website. You should start to notice a difference in your search engine ranking after some time. Another great search engine marketing strategy is to purchase ad space. Google Ads is a popular spot for businesses to buy digital ad space. You’ve likely seen these ads appear on your Google search results. They appear at the very top and are labeled as Ads. Overall, search engine marketing can be complicated and confusing which is why we recommend utilizing a marketing agency to get the best results.
Implementing SEO Strategies
Since SEO is organic, it’s important to focus on the basics for your website and digital marketing. We already know how essential a great website is for gaining leads for your business, but it’s also important for strengthening your SEO. A few factors to keep in mind for improving SEO include; finding relevant keywords, making your website accessible, incorporating internal and external links, and building landing pages. Outside of these tactics, we strongly recommend creating a blog page. Blogging is great for building SEO because it allows you to incorporate your keywords used on your website within your content. Try these strategies for yourself and track your results! You’ll be amazed at the difference they can make.
As stated previously, all of these strategies support your business. They are necessary to ensure that both your SEO and SEM are strong. Remember, without a robust SEO plan, it’s difficult to achieve goals related to SEM.
